The support for the event was enormous – we almost ran out of space for all of the workshops and activities organized by our co-hosts and sponsors. Now, we want to build on this success.

As our goal for the 2012 HYLS is to include youth at ALL levels and in every stage of planning, this year’s summit will be spearheaded by a Youth Committee. Alongside the support provided by partner organizations, youth of the Himalayan communities will be put on the forefront of organizing an event that is by the youth, of the youth and for the youth.

We would like to encourage all young people from the Himalayan communities (Bhutanese, Nepali, and Tibetan) to participate and play their part in writing the next chapter of HYLS. If you are (OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS) an interested/interesting/talented individual, please request the application, fill it out and email it to us. To request a Youth Committee application, please email Jain Thapa at himalayanyouth@gmail.com.

The deadline for the application period is April 20, 2012.

At SFIAAFF 2011, CAAM highlighted South Asian cinema by screening several wonderful films; this year, we focus on a special part of that region, the Himalayas, specifically Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet.

With funding from the Asian Pacific Fund and the Comcast Foundation, we collaborated with the grassroots organization Sahayeta at the first Himalayan Youth Summit in Oakland, connecting with youth from those three national backgrounds for an intensive media training workshop. From there, the Himalayan Youth Voices Project was born. The project was created and organized by Sapana Sakya, Public Media Director at CAAM.

The Project’s goal is to engage a growing but often invisible segment of the Asian American community in the Bay Area, and to give its youth access to the tools that enable them to tell their own stories. The youth participated in a ten-week workshop with CAAM and the youth media experts at TILT (Teaching Intermedia Literacy Tools).

CAAM has a long history of supporting media makers but this workshop was a first step in proactively engaging a community that we rarely see in Asian American media spheres. The youth participants were introduced to both professional production skills and the media literacy skills necessary to navigate today’s digital reality. The youth created two final films: Momo Moment and Team Hope, involving two topics that the Himalayan community is passionate about: the dumpling and the game of soccer.

Check out the HYVP video blog on CAAM’s website , and please join us in welcoming these budding filmmakers and their films to SFIAAFF and the larger Asian American film community!

As we continue to work out the details with local Humla students and residents we are also reaching out to the Bay Area Nepalese youth for help in two important areas. First, youth participation will be essential to help us achieve a fundraising goal of $7000. Secondly, we need student teachers – that’s right, Bay Area youth will be teaching Humla kids English over Skype one hour a week.

To our Bay Area Nepalese parents, please talk to your kids about this very enriching opportunity – one that seeks to instill the necessary virtues of self-confidence and respect.
Spanning a decade, Way of Life traverses the world to illustrate how a single altruistic gesture can evolve into a richly satisfying way of life. The narrative follows the extraordinary journey of Michael Daube, a young artist of modest means from small-town America who finds a valuable piece of art while searching through an abandoned warehouse. He sells it at auction and with the proceeds builds a hospital in one of the remotest areas of India.

Following Daube’s path through India, Nepal, Mexico and the US, the film focuses on the myriad aspects of his continued philanthropic work with hospitals, schools and similar international aid projects. With intimate and moving camerawork, the film interweaves moments of this incredible journey to illustrate how his simple, ground-level approach to working with marginalized communities transforms the lives of those involved. Ultimately,Way of Life explores the relationships between creativity, life’s work and personal happiness in ways that inspire us to consider and appreciate our own best intentions.

Free Primary Health Care Screening Day – October 24th, 2010

Comprehensive healthcare is no longer a fantasy in the United States of America – a handful of San Francisco Bay Area volunteers have made it a reality. Their small network of local health professionals and students brought to the Bay Area’s Himalayan community what many healthcare activists been positing for years: a health care system which addresses three components of individual health: mental, physical, and cultural. Moreover, these services are provided at no cost to the individual served.

On a rainy Sunday morning in late October, the doors of the Davis Street Family Health Clinic in San Leandro opened, once again, for Sahayeta.Org’s 3rd Annual Health Clinic. The dreary weather outside had little effect on the enthusiasm inside; individuals and families waited for their providers while being entertained by live theatrical performances and traditional folk dance. Combining health awareness with cultural activity has become one of Sahayeta.Org’s main strategies in uniting the Bay Area’s Himalayan Community (which includes recent immigrants, working professionals and students of Nepalese, Bhutanese and Tibetan descent). Once registered with the organization, patients receive free follow-up care.

With the support of Samuel Merritt University, Sahayeta’s health program has gained the attention of practitioners throughout Northern California. Three years ago, organizers had to scour the Nepali and Tibetan-speaking network for available health providers. But the health event has slowly made a name for itself, and the search for providers is no longer as arduous. “Now,” according to Sahayeta.Org’s president and Nurse Practitioner, Nisha Thapa, “the providers come to us.” In addition to internists and nurses, this year’s patient group of 75 individuals were seen by Nepalese and Tibetan providers in the fields of Pediatrics, Optometry, Clinical Psychology, Dentistry and Physical Therapy.

In addition to the annual key organizers from Samuel Merritt University, Drs. Valerie Dzubur and Suzanne Schwartz and Clinical Nurse Specialist of Alameda County, Kathy Ahoy, Sahayeta.Org is deeply grateful for the participation of:

Their small network of local health professionals and students brought to the Bay Area’s Himalayan community what many healthcare activists been positing for years: a health care system which addresses three components of individual health: mental, physical, and cultural. Moreover, these services are provided at no cost to the individual served.
